Mission Statement

Welcome to Ages to Ages Publications. Our aim is to provide quality books, resources, workshops and adult information that inspires, informs and enhances the quality of children's relationships with adults!

Our Books and the two R's...Reading and Relationships

We all know that reading to children helps them learn new words, make conceptual associations (e.g text flows from left to right). In addition, it extends the world around them and can often teach moral lessons. Books also encourage imagination, problem solving and provide endless opportunities for questions and discussions. We would all agree that reading to children ultimately contributes to their future reading and writing ability. But what about the emotional value that comes from reading with children? That quiet time when the active toddler can be calmed with a story. That soothing moment when a distraught preschooler can experience a peaceful intimate story that relates to their experience or emotions. That sheer joy in an older child's eyes when you set aside time just for them.

This action of reading with children has many benefits:

  • It sends powerful messages about much you value the time you share together.
  • It provides reciprocal pleasure for both child and adult.
  • It fosters a sense of security and predictability (especially if it becomes part of your daily routine).
  • It nutures the attachment bond between child and adult.
  • It develops fond childhood memories for the growing child. It can develop a life long love of reading.

At Ages to Ages Publications, we believe that reading with and to children, has an important part to play in nurturing secure attachments. The book itself can become a secondary attachment object , especially when it is used as a `handle' to facilitate new relationships. The child may need (or request help) in reading a story and suddnely this new `attachment' provides the opportunity for an intimate shared experience. If this reading experience is repeated often, it can foster a sense of safety, security and predictability. this is especially the case for children who are mastering new transitions and need to develop a sense of belonging in new enviornments such as day care, preschool, school, new homes etc.

Author Visits

Hello, My name is Eleni McDermott and I am the author of both Tears in a Treasure Box and Cranky Granny.

I would love to visit your Bookstore, Library, Preschool or Childcare Service and I can package a presentation to suit your needs. As a self-published author, I can talk about the writing and publishing industry and my own journey into self publishing. As an Early Childhood Educator, I can share my books at story time with young children. See more on the Workshops & Presentations page.

For more reading information on forming secure attachments go to Adult Learning - Articles Pages.
For more information on workshops about separation anxiety and forming secure attachments go to Workshops and Presentations.
